I had high hopes for this trimmer after falling in love with the Earthwise Electric Mower I just bought, but I’m sadly disappointed.

I hate reviews that have no specifics, so here’s the details. The trimmer is well built, has plenty of power and and a cool pivoting head, but the negative points below more than make up for those good ones.

The auto-line-feed is just terrible even when it works. It only releases more line when the centrifugal force on it is low enough to trigger the spring. That means you either have to work it down to a nub, or release the power until the head spins down to hear a faint “click”. Even then, you only get a small amount, so I ended up having to rev it a few times, every time. There’s just no beating the old tried-and-true bump-feed when they’re built right.

The line spool is easy enough to string, but gets tangled easily and ends up being a major headache when combined with the auto-line-feed head problem above.

There’s a line cutter on the guard intended to waste some line each time more is extended. This burns up line like crazy and keeps it too short. I know it’s only an 11 inch cut, but I had to remove the entire guard to save line and get a decent spread. Working as a professional in the past we would just remove them anyway.

Since the motor is down in the head and rather heavy (powerful, like you’d want), the balance is horrible. All the weight is out at the point you are waving around the most. It’s the worst possible arraignment, and a complete deal-breaker for me. I guess I knew that any trimmer with the motor in the head was going to be like that, but didn’t realize it would be so bad. My forearms still hurt.

Earthwise makes a good product, but the design of this one falls far short. I still love my 22 inch mower, but I’m shopping for another trimmer now for sure.
